Mrs. Rappaport

George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. George Washington wasn't born in America. He was born in England in 1732. George's father was a rich Virginia farmer. George's father owned about 50 slaves and owned three farms on the Potomac River. George lived on all these farms as a little boy. When George was seven, they moved to a farm on the Rappahannock River. They called it Ferry Farm. Soon after he went to school, George learned to write by copying books.
George learned many things outside of school too, like fishing, swimming, and learning to use a gun. He liked going hunting for ducks on the river. Before long, he could run faster than any of his friends and soon rode a hose better than anyone his age.
When George was 11. His father died. When he has 14, he was a strong boy. When he was a man, he wanted to go to sea, but his mother wouldn't let him go to sea. George became a surveyor. They make maps of different lands. Many farmers bought new land in the West so George made many trips to the West. When he was in the West, he shot ducks for his dinner and cooked them over a fire Lawrence, his brother, made.
Soon after his father died, he lived on a farm called Mount Vernon. Life was good at Mount Vernon, but when George became 20, Lawrence became ill. George took Lawrence to the island of Barbados. He thought Lawrence would get well there, but he never got well again. He went home to Mount Vernon to die. Soon after Lawrence died, George became a soldier in the Army of Virginia. Once again the colonists sent their leaders to a meeting and once again George Washington met the Continental Congress.
One last thing. Did you know George had wooden teeth?
