The President I chose is John Tyler. John Tyler was the 10"' President of the United States
of America.
John Tyler was born March 29th 1790, on a plantation on the James River in Virginia. He was the second son of Mary Armistead and John Tyler, who was Governor of Virginia from 1808 to 1811.
John Tyler went to the local school and at the age of 12 was sent to preparatory school division of the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg. Admitted to college three years, later, he graduated in 1807. He then studied law with his father and his cousin, Chancellor Samuel Tyler, and in 1809 was admitted to the bar.
In 1811 John Tyler at the age of 21 was elected to the Virginia Legislature. Then began a career in State and National politics that lasted with little interruption.
In 1813 Tyler married Letitia Christian, daughter of a wealthy Virginia merchant.
At that time the United States was fighting Great Britain in the War of 181 2, and Tyler joined the Virginia militia, however he saw no action. In1816 Tyler was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Richmond.

John Tyler opposed the establishment of the second Bank of the United States. John objected to, distribution of public lands to homesteaders and he opposed interference with slavery by the Federal Government.
ln1839 the Whig nominated William Henry Harrison for President and John Tyler for Vice
President. The slogan became "Tippecanoe and Tyler, too." William Harrison won the vote and one Month later died leaving John Tyler in charge of swearing himself in as President.
In 1842 Tyler's first wife who had born 8 children died. Tyler married Julia Gardiner and they had 7 children, and Tyler became the first President to marry while in office.
In 1843 he hoped to rally the party for the annexation of Texas. On three days before leaving the Presidential office Tyler signed the Texas annexation bill into law.
In 1861 he headed a peace convention that met in Washington D.C. in hope of averting the
coming Civil War. He was also elected to the Confederate House of Representatives however he suffered a stroke and died before he could take his seat.

Julie:
What did you do before you became President of the United States?
John:
I served as Governor of the state of Virginia and Vice President of the United States.

Julie:
What was it like being Governor of Virginia?
John:
It was uneventful.

Julie:
What was it like working with Congress?
John:
I was engaged in bitter struggles with rivals.

Julie:
How old were you when you started you're Presidency?
John:
I was 51 years old.

Julie:
Were you married?
John:
Yes, my first wife died and I remarried.

Julie:
Do you have any children?
John:
Yes, 15

Julie:
As President what were your standings on slavery?
John:
I feel that the Government should not be involved.

Julie:
In the history of the American Presidency how were you viewed?
John:
I wasn't very popular because when President Harrison died, I elected myself and sworn myself to be President.

Julie:
What was the most important accomplishment you did as President?
John:
I was known for the annexation of Texas - meaning Texas would become part of the United States instead of Mexico.
