Aaaahhh! Screamed the congressmen determined not to let John Quincy talk in the House of Representative's. John Quincy was the most hated man in the House of Representative's.
This is what John Quincy had to go through everyday but he overcame the opposition and went on to become one of our greatest leaders. This is what I will talk about in my report.
John Quincy Adams was born July 11, 1767 in Braintree, Massachusetts in a two-story house. Because his father was a lawyer and often went far way, John Quincy was tutored by his mother and John Adam's law clerks.
Before John Quincy was eight years old, the American Revolution broke out on April 19, 1775. British soldiers fought with Militiamen. Now England understood that Americans were determined to resist British rule even if it meant bloodshed.
In 1778 John Adams and John Quincy boarded a twenty-four gunned boat. John Quincy was only 12 years old but because John Adams had been assigned an important diplomatic mission, John Quincy didn't want to be left home again so John went with his Dad. to France. Before John Adams started his diplomatic jobs, he put John Quincy in a French learning school.
A visit to the Dutch City, Leiden persuaded John Adams to put his son in Leiden University.
By the time John Quincy's 14" birthday, he heard about an American, Frances Dana who was looking for a secretary and an interpreter. So John became his secretary and interpreter. For two months they traveled across Eastern Europe until they arrived in Saint Petersburg, the Russian capital.
After more than a year in Saint Petersburg, John Adams finally called his son. So John Quincy set off to Holland.
In Holland, John Adams was arranging a peace treaty. The treaty was signed on September 3, 1783. Finally the United States were free.
Then John Quincy traveled back to America and went to Harvard College. After his graduation he started law school. After finishing law school, he became a lawyer. His father had become Vice President
In 1794, John Quincy was appointed Minister of Holland. At the age of twenty-six, John Quincy started his public service career.
When John Quincy finally arrived in Holland, he found the country griped in war. After the war, John Quincy went back to England. With extra time he, began looking for a wife. Soon he found 22 year old Louisa Catherine Johnson and soon they were engaged.
Good news had arrived for John Quincy; he had been appointed Prime Minister of Portugal. But before he could leave, he heard that his father had become president.
As time went on Thomas Jefferson became president. Then James Monroe became the President and John Quincy was Vice President.
As the presidential election of 1824 neared, John Quincy decided to run for president, not thinking he would win. But the others still attacked him. The votes were in - Andrew Jackson had won the popular vote. But the electoral had to be at least 131 and it was 99. So the House of Representatives would determine the president. Mr. Clay (the lead representative) went to John Quincy's house and told him he was going to pick him.
In April, John Quincy and his family moved into the White House. (Then it was called the president's mansion.) While living in the White House, a normal day for John Quincy would be to
wake up at 5 o'clock, walk 4 miles, come back and, light a fire, read newspapers, then eat breakfast. After eating breakfast he would be visited by townspeople, then late in the afternoon he ate dinner, and then he would sign government papers and read. Then he would go to bed at I I o'clock.
In 1828 Andrew Jackson won John Quincy by a landslide for president.
In November John Quincy was selected representative for Plymouth. On his first day he tried to put an end to slavery. While the Northern people supported him, the Southern hated him.
Finally in .1844, the majority elected the gag rule, which meant that an idea about slavery couldn't be thrown, out for no reason.
Two years later John Quincy was sitting and a second later he was dead. He died from a stroke. He may be dead but he will never be forgotten.

A shabby dresser, he wore the same hat for ten years.
He was the first president to have his picture taken.
On hot days the President would go skinny-dipping in the Potomac River. One morning a boy took his clothes and ran off. Luckily someone went into the White House and got him another set of clothes.
Another day he tried to cross the river in a canoe but it sank so he had to swim all the way back. His shirt filled with water and weighed about 56 more pounds but luckily he made it back alive.
