In December of 1860 northemers
and southemers glared at one another. Johnson was one of them.
He was a northemer who; was opposed to slavery. Because of
that he met much opposition from southemers. Once Andy was on
a train during his presidency when a mob grabbed him by the nose
and pulled him off the train. They punched him and spit on him
just because he was against slavery. His courage to stand up
to others and think for himself helped him to go to become one
of our greatest presidents.
People from miles away enjoyed
the Christmas Ball at Casso's Inn. Andy's father was a servant
working there. 'that is the inn where Andrew Johnson was born
near Raleigh, North Carolina December 29, 1808.
At the age of three, Andy's father
died. His mother left poor with two sons went to work as a tailor.
Soon she was remarried but was still poor.Andy never went to
school, instead he, stayed home to help his mom. His mom taught
him how to sew. Soon his mom couldn't pay for food. She let
the town tailor take care of Andrew and William Johnson Andy
went to work as a tailor to make money. Andy, William and some
of their friends pulled a prank by rocking a house of an old
woman. Their friends got caught but they moved.
When they did move, Andy fell
in love. On May 17,1827 he got married to 17 year old Eliza
McCardle only being 18 himself.
Andrew Johnson became the President
soon after Abraham Lincoln's assassination. He was Lincoln's
Vice President. For two months after Lincoln died his wife was
allowed to stay in the White House. Andrew's daughter Martha
Johnson Patterson and her family went to live with her dad.
Soon everyone love the "Johnson
family." People even started calling Andrew, King Andy.
But when the fall elections came Andrew wasn't "King Andy"
anymore or even close. Instead, he was a traitor because he didn't
repel and persecute the beaten rebels. Andy was so unliked that
people drew him with daggers in his stomach. People started
a lot of rumors. They would say that Andrew hired John Wilkes
Booth to assassinate President Lincoln. Those rumors were the
thing that lead to his impeachment. On March 23, 1868, the trial
began. After a long period of time Andrew Johnson was found
not guilty.
Andrew Johnson died on July 31,
1875 at the age of 67.
