Ulysses S. Grant as a seventh
child of Jesse and Hanna was well educated and known everywhere
for his bravery in battles.
He had a love for ponies and a
love for winning. Grant was the first man to go against a woman
in a campaign! He also was the Republican's favorite when in
office!
Ulysses S. Grant was born on April
27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio.
At a young age Grant became very
fond of ponies. He hated his fathers job as a tannery and wanted
badly to watch the stables.
At the age of seven, Grant began
hauling wood and at the age of eleven he was strong enough to
handle the plough, also to bring in the vegetables in at harvest
time.
Grant attended a series of schools
as a child. In 1839 Grant received an invitation to the United
States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Although he
had no interest, he accepted the appointment.
In 1843 Grant graduated twenty-first
in his class of thirty-nine at West Point. His best subject was
math.
Grant's first assignment was a
second Lieutenant, near St. Louis.
In 1844 his unit was transferred
to Louisiana then to Texas in 1845. Grant fought in many battles,
including the Palo Alto, Resaca de la Palma, Monterrey, Vera
Cruz, Cerro Gordo, and Chapultepec.
He was recognized for his bravery
and became first lieutenant after the capture of Mexico City
in September 1847. In 1848 Grant married Julia Dent. Grant and
Julia had four kids, Fredrick, Ulysses, Ellen, Jesse.
Grant later resigned from the
army and became a farmer to support his family.
Grant was the seventh child of six siblings. His parents are
Jesse and Hanna Grant. Most of Grant's family know Ulysses as
"Uncle Sam".
By 1868 Grant was elected president
on the Republican ticket!
Grant was the first man to run
against a woman! Her name was Victoria Woodhull.
During the 1872 presidential race
both candidates suffered ugly attacks.
In the White House on November
5, 1872 the president waited as the election day grew closer.
Soon the Newspapers would blare the voting results. Ulysses S.
Grant got 3,598,235 votes! Grant had won a second term as president!
Grant liked how the United States
was so wealthy. But he wanted it to be much more than that. So
he tried to buy the Caribbean Island of Santo Domingo. But failed
after congress turned on the idea.
As the 1872 presidential campaign
approached, he stayed most popular among the Republicans.
One of the negative things that
happened when Grant was in the office was, Grant had given his
friends Government jobs. His friends stole federal funds, and
Grant took the blame.
Once Grant had put money in the
bank and once again they stole money. Grant was charged millions
of dollars!
In 1885 Grant had decided to write
an autobiography about himself and his life. It was a big hit
and made Grant's family rich!
Four days after it was finished,
Grant died of cancer at Mount Mcgreory, New York. He was buried
by Riverside Drive also in New York.
