In 1974, a man stood before the United States and said, "Hello, my name is Jimmy Carter, and I am running for President of the United States. I need your help." There was one problem, no one had heard of Jimmy Carter.
James Earl Carter, Jr., was born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924. He had two sisters and one brother. When he was six, he sold bags of peanuts when he wasn't working in the peanut fields. He made about a dollar a day and five dollars on Saturday. He also started school when he was six. When he was nine, he bought five bails of cotton and sold them when the priced increased. When Jimmy was twelve, his teacher asked him to read "War and Peace." He read it and it became one of his favorite books and he read it many more times throughout his life. He was intrigued with how government was formed and how it worked.
In 1941, Jimmy went to a junior college to study chemistry and engineering. In 1943, he was accepted into the U.S. Naval Academy. In 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith. She was nineteen and he was twenty-two.
In 1953, when his dad died, Jimmy resigned from the navy and took over his peanut business. In 1962, some of Jimmy friends asked him to run for Georgia State Senate. He said, "no" at first, but eventually he decided to do it. In the race, Homer Moore got more votes than Jimmy, then some people found out that Jo Hurst had voted for Moore on behalf of dead people and people in prison! Jimmy was declared the winner after the scandal was uncovered. He worked hard to get rid of garbage through recycling throughout the state of Georgia.
In 1966, Jimmy Carter ran for Georgia's governor and lost. Four years later, he ran for governor again and this time he won! While he, was governor, he made more jobs for black people and made jobs where blacks could work with white people. He even hung pictures of famous black people (like Martin Luther King, Jr.) in Georgia's capital building. The number of black employees rose by 40%.
In 1974, he announced that he would be running for President of the United States! His running mate was Walter Mondale. He was running against Gerald Ford, the former president. JIMMY WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As the 39th President, he worked hard to get Americans to conserve energy and water. He also wanted a less polluted country. He tried to eliminate the making of nuclear weapons by making a treaty with the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, the Senate thought the Russians would have an unfair advantage if this treaty were made. President Carter also agreed that on the 31st of December in 1999, the Panamanians would get control of the Panama Canal. In 1978, Carter invited Egypt's and Israel's presidents to meet with him at Camp David; they accepted his invitation. For thirteen days the three presidents debated various issues and when the thirteen days were over, the presidents of Egypt and Israel made a treaty for peace between their, countries called, "The Camp David Accord."
In 1979, Iran had been taken over and their leader ran away from the country. Other leaders let the Shah (Iran's leader) visit their countries. Then one day, the Shah became very sick with cancer and he could only get the appropriate treatment in the United States. Carter let him enter the country. The people, who had taken over Iran, were mad at Carter for this and took 63 American hostages. It took over two years for Carter to get the hostages freed. By the time they were freed Ronald Reagan had just taken the Oath of Office for President of the United States.
It is the year 2000 and Jimmy Carter is still alive and is active in helping solve world problems. He is still helping people and involved in community service.

He was the first president to come from the South since the world war.
His slogan was a smiling peanut because he was a peanut farmer.
