Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument
Quarai Unit... Gran Quivira, Abó, and Quarai

Some of the oldest missions in New Mexico were in the pueblos of Humanas (Gran Quivira), Quarai,
and Abó. They are about 100 miles south of Santa Fe. They have become known as the cities that died
of fear. They were abandoned by 1672 due to the continuous raids of nomadic Indians from the east.

 At the left is San Isidro, built in the early 1620's. At the right is San Buenaventura. Started in 1642 , and never finished. In the foreground is Mound 7 of the original village.
