Tyuonyi...
Rito de los Frijoles

Tyuonyi is a pueblo of about 400 rooms that are in a circular cluster of one to three stories in height. In the central plaza there are three kivas. The only access to the central plaza and the village was by way of a single narrow passageway on the eastern side of the village.

There were many kivas in Frijoles Canyon, the most important being the three at Tyuonyi and a large kiva a short distance to the east.

Plan of Tyuonyi and the kiva to the east near the Rito de los Frijoles.    Wall detail of Talus House above Tyuonyi.    Long House... Notice the viga holes that were made to support the ends of roof beams. These holes indicate that the structure was three to four stories high.

Ceremonial Cave...
Frijoles Canyon...

About a mile up the canyon from Tyuonyi is a kiva that is in an alcove and has been well preserved. By climbing a series of ladders, the Indians could reach the rock overhang now known as "Ceremonial Cave" because of the kiva that is enclosed under the overhanging rock.

The kiva had been excavated and reroofed. At the time of its use it might have been a ceremonial retreat for some of the people of the village.
