 Ride Notes

This was a continuation of Ride Number 9 to Delta,
Utah and Ride Number 16 from Delta to Holden, Utah. Since
I had been to Holden we decided to drive there in the morning.
Because of several problems we were late and I wasn't able to
leave until after 10:30. With the change from Daylight Savings
Time, this was like leaving at 11:30. In my hurry I didn't get
enough sleep or food the day before or Friday morning. All of
this caused me to have a hard time both days of this ride. The
hills to Beaver were hard and the cold made me very stiff.
Over the pass ahead of Beaver I could see signs of a very
large forest fire from this last summer. For miles I could still
smell smoke as I rode. I was hoping to get to Parowan, but thought
it would be better to stop in Beaver.

This is a fire that I would see on my ride the next week looking
north from above Kanab.
The next day I started from Beaver. As I went around a turn,
the warning grooves at the side of the shoulder to wake people
up if they fall asleep became the width of of the shoulder. This
makes for hard riding on a bike! To make it worse, I had lost
my rear-view mirror, so I was not able to ride in the right traffic
lane because I couldn't see who was coming up behind me. I had
to really strain to look back to watch the traffic.
As I neared the turnoff to Parowan I knew that I wasn't going
to be able to go much farther. Even after riding nearly two hours,
it was still cold enough that the water from a farmers sprinkling
system in Paragonah was turning to ice before it hit the ground
and fence posts. I took a few photos through this area and headed
to Parowan where I waited for my wife. I was able to add two
new counties but "I had had it!"
